Jesus' earthly life was shaped by specific habits and rhythms: prayer, fasting, solitude, scripture, generosity, fellowship, public worship, and mission. To follow Jesus and become his disciple meant not only assenting to him as Savior and Lord, but imitating his methodical way of life. His invitation remains the same today.

In subsequent centuries, the Church has recognized the transformative power of Jesus' habits and rhythms. They constitute the primary means by which we experience God's grace and cooperate in our ongoing sanctification.
